Brunei Students Engage in Hands-On Learning Through National Educational Initiative

In a move to enhance educational experiences, students in Brunei are participating in hands-on learning activities as part of a national initiative. Recently, 130 students from Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School (SMPJNPHAB) engaged in a unique learning experience centered on non-destructive testing (NDT).

The event, organized by the school's career department in collaboration with Reliability Services and Solutions (RSSB) Sdn Bhd, aimed to provide students with insights into potential career paths and the professional world. RSSB personnel delivered presentations and demonstrations on various forms of NDT, including visual, penetrant, magnetic particle, radiography, and ultrasonic testing.

Students were divided into groups to visit booths across the venue, where they learned about NDT techniques and even tried out rope access techniques, including rescue methods in case of emergencies. The practical exposure aimed to broaden their understanding and interest in technical fields.

RSSB Operation Director Mohamad Azlan bin Haji Tuah and Technical Manager Balakrishnan Chandramohan led the presentations and demonstrations. The event concluded with the senior mistress presenting a token of appreciation to RSSB's Managing Director Elmey bin Julkeply and a representative of RSSB.

Hands-on learning experiences are essential for students to develop practical skills and prepare for future careers, which can have a significant impact on a country's economic growth and development. By investing in education, Brunei is taking a step towards achieving its vision of becoming a more innovative and sustainable nation by 2035.

SMPJNPHAB Senior Mistress Academic I Joliyah binti Haji Mohd Ali expressed appreciation, stating, "We are honoured to have RSSB here to give a career talk and exhibitions on what they do."

In another significant development, the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Shell Eco-marathon (SEM) team is set to represent Brunei at the SEM Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2024. The competition will take place from July 2-6 at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit in Lombok, Indonesia.

Led by Hifdzur Azmin bin Haji Mohd Zain, the team consists of eight members: Ahmad Muzakker bin Haji Khalid, Muhammad Ahmad Hasyer bin Sulong, Muhammad Aqil Nuruddin bin Janeil, Iman bin Abdul Walid, Fatin Amanina binti Haji Abd Azis, Raihani binti Muhammad Rafie, and Amal Nabillah binti Haji Abd Aziz.

The team has designed and built an electric vehicle named 'Mekar,' which translates to 'blossom' in English. The vehicle is the result of ten months of intense dedication and work. It has achieved a 70 percent reduction in total weight compared to its predecessor, enhancing its efficiency and maneuverability.

Hifdzur Azmin, the team leader, commented, "Alhamdulillah, this year we've successfully completed the construction of the seventh electric vehicle at UBD for the competition, which we've named 'Mekar.'" He added, "Our aim is not only to promote sustainability by minimizing material waste but also to facilitate future UBD teams' learning process."

These initiatives reflect Brunei's commitment to providing students with practical learning experiences and preparing them for future careers. The hands-on approach aligns with the nation's aspiration towards Brunei Vision 2035, emphasizing innovation and sustainability.
