A tragic incident in Zambia's Southern Province has resulted in the deaths of ten people and the hospitalization of several others after consuming a suspected homemade brew made with methylated spirit. The incidents occurred between May 12 and May 13, 2024, in the districts of Zimba, Pemba, and Namwala.

The affected areas include Siankope A village in Chief Simwatachela's area, Zimba District, Pemba, and Namwala District. The deaths were only reported to authorities on May 16, 2024.

In Zimba District, two people died, and five others are fighting for their lives at Kabanga rural health center. Pemba District saw three fatalities, with four others receiving medical attention at Kasiya Mission Hospital. Namwala District experienced the highest toll, with five deaths reported.

Police Deputy Spokesperson Danny Mwale revealed that the victims brewed the toxic beverage using methylated spirit mixed with sugar. Further investigation found that some of the concoctions also included water and shoe polish, which are highly toxic when ingested.

All victims suffered from severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vision problems. Mwale noted that reports from members of the public indicate that the number of victims affected as a result of drinking homemade alcohol is higher than initially reported.

This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with homemade alcoholic beverages in Zambia. Previous cases of mass beer poisoning have highlighted a recurring issue in the country, necessitating stricter regulations and public awareness about the risks of consuming unregulated brews.

Police and health officials are intensifying their investigations to prevent further tragedies. Authorities are urging the public to avoid homemade alcoholic beverages and report any suspicious activities related to the production and distribution of such brews.
