Malaysian Opposition Leader's Son Charged with Accepting RM100,000 Bribe

Muhammad Faisal Hamzah, the 40-year-old son of Malaysian opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, has been charged with accepting a bribe of RM100,000. The charge was made in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court and relates to a government contract awarded in 2018.

Faisal Hamzah pleaded not guilty to the charge before Judge Rozina Ayob. He was charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the bribe sum or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The court granted bail at RM25,000 with one surety and imposed additional conditions, including the surrender of Faisal's passport and regular reporting to the MACC office. The case is set for mention on July 5, 2023.

This is not Muhammad Faisal's first brush with the law. In April last year, he was charged with nine counts of violating federal controlled goods regulations, allegedly providing false information by creating fake invoices for the sale of subsidized cooking oil.
