Tanganyika Law Society Extends Nomination Deadline Amid Low Turnout and Leadership Concerns

The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) has extended the deadline for members to submit their nominations for various leadership positions by seven days, moving it from Friday, 31st May, 2024, to Thursday, 6th June, 2024.

This decision was made as a result of a low turnout of nominations, which has been attributed to recent changes in the society's laws and allegations that current leaders have failed to adequately protect members' interests. As of Tuesday, 28th May, 2024, the Electoral Committee had received a limited number of nominations for various positions.

The Electoral Committee, chaired by Mr. Nelson Frank, has encouraged all members, irrespective of gender or disability, to participate in the nomination process. Nominations, accompanied by CVs, should be submitted to the Secretary of the Electoral Committee at the TLS office located at Chato Street, Plot No. 21, Regent Estate, Dar es Salaam, or through the provided email addresses.

The original call for nominations was issued on 8th May, 2024, through the TLS official email and Mwananchi News Paper. Each person presenting a Nomination Form will receive a receipt from TLS to signify that they have lodged the Nomination Form at the TLS Secretariat.

The extension of the nomination deadline by the Tanganyika Law Society highlights the challenges faced by professional organizations in engaging their members and ensuring effective leadership. If not addressed, these issues can lead to a lack of trust and confidence in the organization, seriously impacting its ability to serve its members and the wider community.

The Electoral Committee emphasizes that candidates and their supporters should refrain from campaigning until the Committee announces the campaign commencement date. This measure aims to ensure a fair and orderly election process.

The extension of the nomination deadline highlights the challenges faced by the TLS in engaging its members amid changes in laws and concerns over leadership. The society's commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunity remains a key focus as it addresses these issues.
