Thai Photographer Wins Gold for Capturing Rare 'Mysterious Owl Eye' Plant

Thai photographer Chatree Lertsintanakorn has clinched the gold prize in the Plants and Fungi category of the World Nature Photography Awards. His winning photograph features a rare, parasitic plant that resembles an emerald-green owl, taken at the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Thailand's Tak Province.

The plant, known locally as 'Phisawong Ta Nok Hook' or 'mysterious owl eye,' is a myco-heterotrophic species. Unlike most plants, it does not photosynthesize but instead derives nutrients from fungi in the soil. The plant spends most of its life underground, growing to a mere 2-8 millimeters in length, and only emerges above the soil when fully grown.

Lertsintanakorn discovered this elusive plant while exploring with fellow cameraman Suchat Chanhomhuan, who was part of the team that first identified the species in the Doi Hua Mot Mountains in 2018. The photographer's patience and sharp eye paid off when he finally spotted a plant clear enough to photograph.

"I noticed it grew primarily near the base of trees, making it easy to overlook," Lertsintanakorn explained. "I was surprised by its diminutive size."

The World Nature Photography Awards received thousands of entries from around the globe, showcasing a diverse range of wildlife and natural scenery. Other notable winners included a dramatic shot of a mother zebra rescuing her calf from a cheetah and a picturesque scene of waterfalls in Chile under the Northern Lights.

"Our winners never fail to take our breath away with their stunning images," said Adrian Dinsdale, cofounder of the World Nature Photography Awards. "As always, it's such a joy to see the amazing calibre of entries into the awards."

Lertsintanakorn's achievement not only highlights his exceptional skill but also brings attention to the unique biodiversity found in Thailand. His photograph of the 'mysterious owl eye' plant highlights the hidden wonders that nature holds.
