Death Toll From Heavy Rains And Floods In China Climbs To 60

The death toll from heavy rains and flooding in China has risen to at least 60, state media reported on Tuesday. Several regions in the country’s south have been severely affected by relentless rainfall since last week, leading to floods and landslides that have caused widespread devastation.

In Hunan province, rescuers discovered another five bodies, increasing the region's death toll. The National Meteorological Center has issued a red alert, the highest level, for rainstorms across eight provinces and municipalities, including Anhui and Hunan, for the next three days.

Why This Matters: Southern Guangdong province has been particularly hard-hit, with 47 fatalities reported last week. In addition, at least eight people are missing after a landslide struck Douxi village in the Xinhuang Dong autonomous county of Huaihua, Hunan. 

Authorities in the southeastern province of Fujian reported on Saturday that six people who went missing during landslides were found dead. The ongoing severe weather has left a trail of destruction, damaging infrastructure and livelihoods.
