Severe rains flood Changsha, disrupting subways and prompting evacuations.

Torrential rains inundated Changsha in central China today, causing significant flooding and shutting down subways. The relentless downpour, which has affected southern China for the past two weeks, continues to wreak havoc, although water levels are beginning to recede in some areas.

In Hunan Province, the rainstorm since Sunday has dumped over 100 millimeters of rainfall across 814 townships in 14 cities and prefectures, leading to swollen rivers and extensive flooding. As of Saturday morning, the Qingshan monitoring station in Anhua County reported the highest water level in a tributary of the Zijiang River.

Why This Matters: Yiwangxi Township in Taoyuan County, Changde City, experienced record rainfall, with 395.6 millimeters falling within a 24-hour period between 8 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday. This unprecedented downpour disrupted communications and blocked roads in parts of Taoyuan, forcing the evacuation of over 4,000 people by early Saturday morning. Among those affected were eight campers, seven of whom were rescued, while one remains missing.

The provincial hydrological and water resources survey center has issued warnings to residents in northern and central Hunan about the heightened risk of floods and secondary disasters. Despite the gradual receding of water levels in many rivers and streams, the danger remains significant.

The situation mirrors conditions in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. As of 8 a.m. Saturday, nine rivers were still flowing above alert levels at 12 monitoring stations. However, water levels in most river sections are showing signs of receding, offering some relief to the affected areas.

The continuous rainfall has led to widespread disruptions, affecting transportation, communication, and daily life for thousands of residents. Authorities are actively working to manage the floodwaters and provide aid to those impacted by the severe weather.
