Delhi's unprecedented rainfall resulted in 11 fatalities, including laborers trapped in a wall collapse.

The death toll from rain-related incidents in Delhi rose to 11 on Saturday, following unprecedented rainfall that inundated the city. Among the victims were three laborers who perished when a wall collapsed at a construction site in Vasant Vihar.

According to officials, four additional deaths due to drowning were reported from various parts of the city. The heavy rainfall, recorded on Friday, was the highest in a 24-hour period in June since 1936.

Why This Matters: A Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official confirmed the identities of the laborers who died in the Vasant Vihar collapse: Santosh Kumar Yadav, 19; Santosh Kumar, 20; and Dayaram, 45. Rescue operations involved using cranes to clear the debris and pumping out water from a foundation pit to recover the bodies, which were then taken to Safdarjung Hospital.

The National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Disaster Management Authority, and civic agencies conducted a thorough search to ensure no one else was trapped under the rubble.

In another incident, a 60-year-old resident of Badarpur drowned in a pool of water, with his body recovered from beneath the Okhla underpass. Two young boys also drowned in a similar manner in Samaypur Badli near the Siraspur underpass. A senior police official suggested that the boys might have fallen into a pool of rainwater while playing.

“We are considering all possibilities, including electrocution. However, the exact cause of death will be determined by post-mortem,” the official stated. The fourth drowning incident occurred in Mahender Park near the Shalimar Bagh underpass, where a man was found dead.

Additionally, the police have registered a case under IPC Section 304A (death caused by negligence) following the electrocution death of Rajesh, 39, in Rohini’s Prem Nagar. Rajesh, a resident of Shishmahal Enclave, was declared dead at the hospital after being electrocuted while navigating flooded streets on his way to work.

Rajesh’s friend, Sandeep Kumar, explained that Rajesh had tried to balance himself by holding onto a pole connected to a bulb, leading to his electrocution. "There are many shops with tin sheds. While walking in water, he tried to balance himself and held a pole connected to a bulb, leading to his death," Kumar said.
