US endorses India-Pakistan dialogue autonomy, highlights bilateral exchanges.

The US State Department reiterated its stance on Thursday, affirming support for direct talks between Pakistan and India while emphasizing that the scope and terms of negotiations should be determined solely by the two neighboring nations, not influenced by external parties.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed recent developments involving exchanges between Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding Modi's third term as premier.

Why This Matters: "We value our relationships with both India and Pakistan. We support direct discussions between them, but decisions on pace, scope, and character should be sovereign to these countries," Miller stated during a press briefing.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended congratulations to Modi on June 10 for securing his new term, to which Modi responded with gratitude. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also conveyed felicitations, urging a shift from hate to hope for South Asia's future.

Modi, in response, emphasized India's commitment to peace, security, and progress, underscoring priorities aimed at enhancing well-being and national security.

During the briefing, the State Department spokesperson addressed bilateral security interests between the US and Pakistan, highlighting mutual efforts in combating regional security threats.

"We collaborate closely on counterterrorism through high-level dialogues and capacity-building programs," Miller affirmed, discussing ongoing military engagements aimed at bolstering security cooperation.

Regarding Pakistani Ambassador to the US Masood Khan's statement on the need for modern American weaponry to combat the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Miller acknowledged the concern, noting ongoing discussions on strategic defense partnerships.

The US remains committed to fostering stability and security in the region while respecting the autonomy of Pakistan and India in managing their bilateral relations and regional affairs.
