Nineteen bodies, some with gunshot wounds, were found in an abandoned truck in Chiapas, Mexico.

On Monday, at least 19 bodies were discovered in an abandoned truck in Chiapas, a southern Mexican state bordering Guatemala. The state’s attorney general reported that five of the bodies had gunshot wounds, and all the deceased were clad in dark clothing and tactical vests containing ammunition.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador attributed the deaths to ongoing cartel violence and indicated that some of the victims were migrants from Guatemala. "What causes this? Well, drug trafficking and the trafficking of migrants, meaning human trafficking, it’s a route,” Lopez Obrador stated during his daily press conference on Tuesday. He added, “There are two groups (cartels) fighting ... the people of the area are being protected.”

Why This Matters: Local residents expressed their fear and sorrow over the increasing violence. “It’s sad and I can’t say otherwise, it’s sad that the violence came all the way here,” said one resident. Another remarked, “A lot of fear, I was born and grew up in Chiapas, but given the violence in the state, I had to migrate. I live somewhere else now, outside the state, and only come to visit my family.”

President Lopez Obrador promised a thorough investigation into the deaths and assured that security in Chiapas would be reinforced. Violence in Chiapas has escalated as cartels battle for control over profitable smuggling routes for migrants and drugs. The Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel have been engaged in a fierce turf war in the area, forcing hundreds to flee their homes in January.

The recent discovery underscores the grim reality of cartel influence in southern Mexico, where criminal organizations exploit the region’s strategic location for trafficking operations. The Mexican government faces ongoing challenges in curbing cartel violence and ensuring the safety of its citizens and migrants passing through the area.
