Floodwaters in Rock Valley, Iowa, have receded, restoring electricity and aiding recovery efforts.

Water levels have decreased since the Rock River crested in Rock Valley, Iowa. The flooding, which peaked on Saturday, June 22, inundated areas such as the softball field at the Rock Valley Sports Complex, located a mile from the town center. By the following day, floodwaters had significantly receded from the field.

Rock Valley Chief Monte Warburton reported that electricity has been restored to the city, helping bring a sense of normalcy to the residents. However, as of Sunday afternoon, the city was still waiting for the restoration of water and sewage systems.

Why This Matters: Chief Warburton emphasized the ongoing safety concerns, stating, "We’re basically just going home to home to home, and I can tell you first hand, I’ve been in several of them, foundations have been wiped out. They’re gone, it’s not safe to be in some of them. Definitely a reason for people to slow down and make sure they’re being safe when they go back there."

The flood has had a significant impact on the community, with around 500 homes flooded and 1,500 residents displaced. Despite these challenges, the local community has shown tremendous support. People throughout Sioux County have been aiding Rock Valley residents by sending buses to the churches where evacuees were sheltered. These buses are now transporting residents to Hull, Iowa, where they can take showers and regain a better sense of normalcy.

As Rock Valley begins to recover, residents are returning to their homes to assess the flood damage and check the structural integrity of their houses. This step is crucial to ensure safety as they move back in. The restoration of electricity is a significant milestone, but the community continues to work towards fully restoring other essential services.

Local officials and volunteers remain active in supporting the recovery efforts, helping residents navigate the aftermath of the flooding and providing necessary resources and assistance.
